Please provide a statement describing your background and focus your statement on your reasons for pursuing a legal career and your legal career goals. This statement is important. Please give it appropriate attention. (min. 1000 characters) (Please read FAQs before completing)

I am the benefactor of generational sacrifice. I carry decades of familial struggle into my professional identity, and I am motivated to use law to serve the community. My goal in pursuing law is to advance the equity and opportunity for the Latino community while inspiring the next generation to carry that progress forward.
My paternal grandfather struggled to support his family as a laborer cutting sugar cane in the fields of Puerto Rico. With little more than the promise of stable work he relocated his family to Gary, Indiana. There he spent the next thirty years as a laborer at U.S. Steel. My father followed a similar path, working fifty years as a manual steel laborer. Their hard work built a lineage of opportunity for their children defined by sacrifice and silent perseverance.
Reflecting on my career today I understand their dedication provided me with a choice that they never had, which was the opportunity to depart from blue-collar labor and pursue higher education. College and professional careers were distant concepts for my parents because everyone funneled into the steel mill after high school graduation. My father dedicated his life to ensure that I would never end up laboring at the steel mill. I am a first-generation Latino college graduate. I am the first person in my family to attend graduate school. This May, I will be the first attorney in my entire family. I represent the dream of generations before me, and their sacrifices inspire me to redefine Latino success.
My goal in law is to uplift the generations that come after me and provide them with the same opportunity I was blessed with; the opportunity to achieve more than my parents were allowed to attain. Throughout my career I have used my educational privilege to help others, and I will use my advantage in law to help the community. Before law school I served local communities for over a decade in municipal recreation. In my various roles I worked diligently to offer programs and services that enhanced neighborhood access to health and wellness. I left my career in recreation so that I could champion a larger role in assisting the community through law. While navigating the path to law school, I served the local community working at the Office of the Denver District Attorney. Furthermore, I held numerous volunteer leadership roles on professional association committees and boards. These experiences exemplify my commitment to public service.
During law school I have pursued roles that reflect my dedication to serve the community. I volunteer with the Puerto Rican Bar Association and the Chicago-Kent Hispanic Latinx Law Students Association (HLLSA). I was the Associate Manager volunteer for the Chicago-Kent Self-Help Resource Desk, recruiting and training volunteers to assist pro se litigants navigate the legal system. In my 2L summer I had the honor of working full time on the CARPLS hotline, directly assisting low-income Cook County residents with their legal issues. As a 2L and 3L, I have made it my priority to guide numerous 1Ls through the difficulty of their first year. I actively seek out new law students to mentor so that they will survive 1L, which statistically is the most vulnerable time for them to drop out of law school. I have 26 mentees through volunteering with Chicago-Kent’s HLLSA, First Generation Student Association, and Peer Advisor program. These mentoring experiences have solidified my responsibility to support others, just as I have benefited from those who came before me.
I will use my legal career to create opportunities that wedge open the gate for those who come next. I aspire to serve the community in local or state government roles, first by practicing law at a government agency and later as an elected official. In these positions I can protect public resources, ensure government accountability, and expand access to justice. My grandfather worked in the sugarcane fields. My father worked in the steel mill. I will work in law. Each generation has labored to incrementally progress the opportunity for the next generation. Their progress is my foundation, serving others is my purpose, and the law is how I am paving the path for those that come next.
